The cost for two in a room inside cabin is $280 and the cost for two in a room outside cabin is $320.  They need to pay for the cruise by February 2 to New Direction Travel.  Let me know if you are interested in going.

Self-Advocates for Self-determination

Our program is open to all self-advocates most of our people have developmental disabilities and some of them have physical disabilities also.  This is a great networking group that educates advocates and empowers individuals with disabilities to effect change in their lives.   We meet once a month usually on the fourth Monday evening of the month.  We started our group in November 1998 so we celebrated our ten year anniversary this past November.

Our Activities

We have different speakers to come every month and speak about different subjects that affect people with developmental disabilities. They were talking about cutting one of the bus routes that goes from UNCC to Southpark that goes down Sharon Amity that a lot of our folks use and we advocated to keep that bus route so they decided not to cut it after all There are a lot of things that I would like for us to accomplish and I believe that we have the power to make a difference in our world.  If we want people to be aware of our needs then it is up to us to make sure that those changes are made in order for us to be the most productive and self-determined people possible.   We also do fun stuff we go on a trip every year we went on a cruise to the Bahamas November 8-11, 2007 and we went to Charleston in September 2008.  We went to Charleston, S.C. in September 2008. We are going on a cruise to the Bahamas in January, 2010.  This year at the Association of Self-Advocate convention of N.C. March 27-29 our group won the self-advocate group of the year award for N.C.

What We Believe

We believe that Self-Advocates have the right to live there live as independently as possible no matter what.  We want to educate people and make them aware of the needs of people with disabilities to change their attitudes regarding people with disabilities to include us in activities that interest us and if they are employers then we want them to give us the opportunity to work for them and show them what can do.  Self-Determination is Support, Responsibility, Authority, Freedom and Justice for all.  We have the right to live where we want, to work where we want, to worship where we want and live with whomever we want and to fall in love and get married.

Donations

We are in need of money for our group so that we can help people with developmental disabilities to advocates and to help pay for their cruise since they are on a limited income and their chaperones and the various other things we want to do. Donations to our program can be done here on this donations link.
